Florida State’s first ACC game featured a pitching gem and five home runs.
Wes Mendes tossed seven shutout innings, striking out seven and allowing just two hits, in No. 20 FSU’s 10-0 seven-inning, run-rule win at No. 12 Wake Forest on Friday night.
Mendes (4-1) gave up a pair of walks and allowed just a pair of singles, throwing 100 pitches (59 strikes). It was the first complete game of his career. He came into the game with a 0.83 ERA and will see that lower to 0.63.
Eli Putnam had a pair of home runs. Myles Bailey had a two-run homer, Brayden Dowd had a two-run homer and Nathan Cmeyla had a home run.
FSU (14-3) chased Wake Forest ace Blake Morningtstar (2-2) after four innings. The right-hander allowed nine runs (eight earned) and only had two strikeouts against three walks.
Bailey’s home run was his seventh of the season and scored Noah Sheffield to give FSU a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Dowd tacked on a two-run shot in the third, his fourth of the season, and scored Brody DeLamielleure.
Putnam added home runs in the fourth and fifth, while Cmeyla added a home run in the fifth.
DeLamielleure had a two-run single in the fourth.
A game after FSU had 18 strikeouts in a loss at Florida, the Seminoles only struck out five times on Friday.
Wake dropped to 15-3, losing for the first time in ACC play after a sweep of Stanford last weekend.
