Florida State ace left-hander Wes Mendes signed with the Houston Astros on Friday. Mendes reportedly signed for $1.6377 million, according to MLB reporter Jim Callis. The slot value for the No. 57 pick was $1.6774 million.

Mendes went 9-3 with a 2.81 ERA and an impressive 1.02 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched). Mendes had a 5-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio (125 to 25) in 93 innings. His ERA dropped from 6.82 as a freshman at Ole Miss to 5.54 as a sophomore at FSU before his breakout season.

“Really exciting combination of strikes, fastball and changeup quality, execution to both sides and he really took a step forward this year,” Astros amateur scouting director Cam Pendino told the team’s beat writers after the draft. “From the left side, we think he’s got a chance to be a rotation piece. We think he’s going to move relatively quickly.”

One transfer pitcher signed. South Carolina / Florida transfer Alex Philpott signed with the Tampa Bay Rays. Philpott was a 16th-round pick and is a Tampa native.

Both of FSU’s top high school commitments have now signed. On Friday, Tampa Jesuit right-hander Kaden Waechter signed with the San Francisco Giants for a $3.2475 million signing bonus, per MLB writer Jonathan Mayo. The Giants elevated their offer to sign the No. 55 pick, which had a slot of $1.763 million. Landon Thome, a shortstop, previously signed with the Chicago White Sox (for a reported $2.897 million).

All of the FSU players or commitments who were drafted have now signed. That includes hitters like Myles Bailey and Brayden Dowd as well as all three pitchers — Mendes, Trey Beard and Bryson Moore — from the weekend rotation.
