Florida State struggled to put together consecutive quality at-bats and, when the Seminoles did, couldn’t bring in the runners. A familiar issue led to a 4-3 loss at Virginia on Thursday night.

No. 10 Virginia scored four runs in the fourth, capped by Antonio Perrotta’s two-run homer.

Noah Sheffield had an RBI double and Hunter Carns had a two-run single, both coming in the fifth inning.

No. 7 FSU (22-7, 7-3 ACC) squandered a few more scoring opportunities. Brayden Dowd was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and then Sheffield reached on a fielder’s choice. The runners advanced on an error, but Carns, Kelvyn Paulino Jr. and Eli Putnam struck out as FSU missed a golden opportunity early.

In the fourth, Carns led off with a walk but was erased by a Paulino double play grounder. Eli Putnam followed with a double but John Stutter struck out to end the inning.

The Seminoles hit 2 for 10 with runners on base but they went down in order in the sixth through ninth innings.

FSU’s batters struck out 11 times, the 14th game this season with 10 or more strikeouts.

Wes Mendes (6-2) gave up four hits and two walks in five innings. He allowed all four runs.

Chris Knier tossed three shutout innings, allowing just two hits, a walk and recording two strikeouts.
