Florida State picked up runs in nearly every way imaginable. And it led to a road victory over Virginia.
Hunter Carns went 3 for 5 with a two-run homer and two runs scored as FSU grabbed a 5-2 victory over Virginia in game 2 of the series on Friday afternoon. Carns is now hitting .343 on the season.
FSU generated its first three runs via an Eli Putnam walks with the bases loaded, Kelvyn Paulino Jr.'s sacrifice fly and Cal Fisher's strikeout that went for a passed ball / error on Virginia catcher Jake Weatherspoon.
It was an odd game as FSU benefited from three Virginia errors. The Seminoles struck out 15 times but managed eight hits and walked three times.
The Seminoles held a 3-0 lead briefly before Virginia got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with Joe Tiroly's RBI single.
Carns' 415-foot blast to center cleared the yellow line of the tall batter's eye as AJ Gracia hit the wall and couldn't grab it.
Weatherspoon added a home run in the sixth as Virginia cut the FSU lead to 5-2.
But FSU's pitching was more than good enough even if Trey Beard (3-0) was wild. The left-hander pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, four walks, two hit batters and a wild pitch. Beard had seven strikeouts and tossed 97 pitches (55 strikes).
Right-hander John Abraham had four strikeouts and allowed two hits in four shutout innings. Abraham picked up his fourth save, recording six strikeouts in extended relief of 69 pitches (45 strikes).
Some lineup consistency
Coach Link Jarrett appears to have settled on a lineup, at least for the moment and for the top five hitters. The top of the order was the same for back-to-back days, with Brayden Dowd hitting leadoff (and scoring two runs on Friday). Noah Sheffield followed, with Carns in the No. 3 spot and Paulino Jr. hitting cleanup. Eli Putnam hit fifth. On Friday, Jarrett had Chase Williams hitting sixth, followed by John Stuetzer, Cal Fisher and Carter McCulley. On Thursday, Jarrett had Stuetzer hitting ahead of Williams.
Up next
FSU plays at Virginia on Saturday at 11 a.m. (ACC Network Extra).
