Florida State’s 2026 recruiting class is now smaller as defensive lineman James “Tank” Carrington backed off his commitment on Thursday afternoon.

Carrington is a three-star prospect by 247Sports and Rivals. He had committed on June 16.

“I want to thank Florida State and the awesome coaching staff for giving me the opportunity,” Carrington posted on Twitter/X. “I've decided to decommit from FSU. Much respect to everyone there who believed in me throughout my journey.”

FSU has the No. 15 class in the nation, according to 247Sports and Rivals. The Seminoles have 21 commitments, led by five-star corner Chauncey Kennon.

While Carrington is a loss, FSU has accumulated defensive line commitments from four-star Earnest Rankins of Decatur (Georgia) Southwest DeKalb, three-star Tico Crittendon of Lithonia (Georgia), three-star Wihtley Cadeau of Atlanta Booker T. Washington and three-star Luke Francis of Miami Coral Gables.
