Coaches: Andy Enfield was hired by SMU in April 2024 and is 54-38 across two seasons. He was an assistant coach at FSU from 2006-11. Enfield also coached Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet 16 in 2013 and was Southern Cal’s coach for 11 seasons. Luke Loucks picked up his first ACC win, and victory over a rival, on Tuesday at Miami.
Streaks: SMU picked up a 91-79 win at Wake Forest on Tuesday. FSU grabbed a 65-63 victory at Miami on Tuesday.
Notable wins / losses: FSU’s win over KenPom No. 39 Miami was by far the biggest of the season. The Seminoles have had some narrow losses, including to No. 70 Wake Forest 69-68 last week. SMU defeated No. 58 Butler in November. The Mustangs have also defeated No. 37 Texas A&M (neutral site) and No. 33 UNC (home). They have ACC losses to No. 28 Clemson, No. 3 Duke and No. 13 Virginia.
Of note: Enfield recruited Loucks in high school and coached him for three seasons at FSU. When Enfield was at FSU, the Seminoles were among Division I’s top teams from the free-throw line. SMU is shooting 77 percent from the line this season … The Seminoles left on Thursday for Dallas to get out ahead of the winter storm … This will be the ninth game FSU has played this season against a KenPom top-40 team.
FSU stats: The Seminoles’ 12 steals was the most in an ACC game … Robert McCray V is two points away from 1,400 in his career … McCray leads FSU in scoring (13.9) and assists (6.4). … Thomas Bassong is averaging 7.2 points in FSU’s six league games. He’s started the last three games and seen his minutes significantly jump (a season-high 31 at Miami).
SMU stats: Boopie Miller (6-foot, 175 pounds) averages 19.8 points and 6.8 assists. Jaron Pierre Jr. (6-5, 210) averages 16.9 points. B.J. Edwards (6-3, 200) averages 13.9 points and 5.9 rebounds. Center Samet Yigitoglu (7-2, 270) averages 10.7 points and 7.9 rebounds. … Yigitoglu will have a significant size advantage over FSU big men like Alex Steen (6-9, 230), Alier Maluk (6-11, 220) and Shah Muhammad (6-11, 200).
Quotable: “Andy is an incredible coach. He led the recruiting efforts to bring me to Florida State,” Loucks said. “He would come down to Clearwater High School quite often. His way of recruiting me is to take me onto the tennis courts and just work me on the tennis courts. I didn’t play much tennis. He loved playing tennis.”
