Coaches: Luke Loucks is 5-5 in his first season at FSU after a few stops in the NBA as an assistant coach, notably at Golden State and Sacramento. Dayton is coached by Anthony Grant, who is in his ninth season after a short run at VCU (2007-09) and Alabama (2010-15). Grant is also a Dayton alum and has experience as an NBA assistant.
Streaks: FSU has lost four straight, including Saturday’s game to UMass at Sunrise, Fla. Dayton is coming off an 84-61 win over North Florida at home on Saturday.
Notable wins / losses: Dayton has defeated Marquette and Georgetown, both games in overtime. The Flyers had a four-point loss to KenPom No. 9 BYU and an 86-73 loss to No. 24 Virginia. FSU has no top-150 wins yet, with its best victory over No. 230 Georgia Southern. The Seminoles have lost to No. 53 Texas A&M, No. 22 Georgia, No. 8 Houston and No. 162 UMass.
Of note: FSU is playing its final three non-conference games in the course of seven days. After the road trip to Dayton, FSU will play host to No. 365 Mississippi Valley State on Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 297 Jacksonville at 7 p.m. on Monday. The Seminoles will then have a holiday break before traveling to UNC to open ACC play on Dec. 30.
FSU stats: Robert McCray leads the ACC in assists per game (7.2). … McCray had 21 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds in the loss to UMass. McCray (14.8 points), Lajae Jones (12.5 points) and Chauncey Wiggins (12.4 points) lead FSU in scoring. … The Seminoles are struggling from 3-point range, making just 31.3 percent of their shots.
Dayton stats: The Flyers aren’t good in perimeter defense, with opponents scoring on 38.6 percent of 3s. … But they are very good at producing steals, and opponents average 24.2 turnovers per game. The Flyers have 109 steals in 11 games … The Flyers will likely start a four-guard lineup, led by 6-foot-4 De’Shayne Montgomery (16.1 points, 56.1 percent shooter from the floor) and Javon Bennett (15.6 points), who is 5-10. Amael L’Etang, who is a 7-foot-1 sophomore from France, averages 12.5 points and 6.9 rebounds.
Quotable: “We’re in a tough spot. We lost four in a row. We’re playing with inconsistent effort and fight,” Loucks said after the loss to UMass. “As long as our coaching staff has to continue to coach effort and just showing up and doing your job, we’re going to be in a tough spot. We’re going to have nights like tonight. As soon as we figure that out, of showing up to work with a lunch pail and a gritty attitude, our team will take the next step.”
