Four errors, 14 strikeouts and 12 runners left on base later, Florida State’s stay in the ACC Tournament ended abruptly on Friday.

Kai Wagner hit a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the ninth as Pittsburgh stunned FSU 8-6 in a weird, wild quarterfinal game.

The game was delayed by lightning (and rain) and a chunk of it was played in steady rain. Pittsburgh made three errors and leaned on arms who were throwing on short rest, but they outlasted the Seminoles.

The game began with a fielding error by Ben Barrett in the first inning, which helped Pittsburgh enjoy a four-run lead. After Barrett hit an improbable grand slam in the fifth to tie the game, his hard-hit grounder to second base in the eighth inning was bobbled by Trey Fenderson as the Seminoles scored the go-ahead run. For the moment.

Right-hander Brodie Purcell’s pitch was down and in to Wagner, who drove the ball over the right-field wall. Pittsburgh celebrated and got the final three outs to knock out FSU in the bottom of the inning.

Barrett went 2 for 5 with a two-out grand slam to right field — measuring at 376 feet — as he had his first home run and RBI since 2023. The senior pitcher / first baseman was a starter in the field against Clemson two weekends ago and came through in the biggest moments at the plate, making ammends for his early error.

Brody DeLamielleure went 2 for 5 and John Stuetzer went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

For FSU, the wait will be a long one. There’s no doubt FSU will host a regional next weekend. But the big question lingers.

Did the Seminoles do enough to secure a top-8 national seed? The answer won’t be known until Monday at noon (ESPN2), but there will be unease as the NCAA Selection Committee (which includes FSU athletics director Michael Alford) will announce the full 64-team field.

Due to the threat of rain, both semifinals have been moved up — Miami-Georgia Tech to 11 a.m. and UNC-Pittsburgh at 3 p.m. Both games will be televised on ACC Network.
