Jayvan Boggs was on track for a productive freshman season. After enrolling early, Boggs said and did all of the right things as he earned praise from coaches and teammates.

But an injury derailed part of his season and Boggs was limited to eight games, catching nine passes for 103 yards. He didn’t have a touchdown, but found the end zone on a two-point play in the loss at NC State in November.

Boggs entered the transfer portal but was among a large group of Seminoles who reversed course and on Jan. 10 pulled his name and opted to stay at FSU in 2026. He spoke on Tuesday about a conversation with receivers coach / offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. about his development as a sophomore.

“Me and coach Harris really just had a sit-down talk, being more vocal and getting better at every aspect of my game,” Boggs said. “Getting faster, getting stronger.”

FSU returns 1,000-yard receiver Duce Robinson and a breakout star in Micahi Danzy. But determining a No. 3 receiver and establishing reliable depth is a storyline to watch this spring. Boggs is among a large number of options, including second-year players Tae’Shaun Gelsey and Teriq Mallory. Devin Carter is also among the freshmen who have impressed.

Boggs was the first true freshman receiver at FSU to start a season opener since 1992. He’s healthy again and confident.

Once a UCF commitment, Boggs signed with FSU and followed assistants like Gus Malzahn and Harris Jr. to Tallahassee. Boggs also spoke of the respect he and Harris Jr. had built from the recruiting trail through the years to now year 2 for both at FSU.

“That’s my guy,” Boggs said. “Coach Harris, we got real love for each other. He’s going to push me to the max. He’s never going to let me slip up on anything.”

Developing corners

FSU coach Mike Norvell was asked about younger cornerbacks developing this spring. With Quindarrius Jones and Ja’Brill Rawls working their way back from injuries sustained last fall, Norvell mentioned Jamari Howard and Charles Lester III as earning significant reps this spring.

“Q is non-contact this spring. Ja’Brill is limited, probably get a little bit more work as we get later on in the spring,” Norvell said. “Having those two guys not going, it really does open the door for opportunities. Guys like Charles Lester, Jamari Howard.”

Jamari Howard missed all of 2024 due to a knee injury. He played just nine snaps against East Texas A&M and Kent State last fall. Howard had a tackle and a pass breakup against Kent State.

“He’s really embracing the aggressiveness of what’s necessary,” Norvell said.

FSU also added Nehemiah Chandler, a transfer cornerback from South Alabama, via the transfer portal. As a freshman at South Alabama, Chandler had 32 tackles, 13 pass breakups and two interceptions. His 13 PBUs tied South Alabama’s single-season record.

“Chandler has been really good,” Norvell said. “I like what I’ve seen from him. He’s a really good cover guy that is still developing there physically. His confidence is growing.”
