The Florida State softball team played a fall exhibition on Sunday afternoon, defeating Troy 9-2 in seven innings. Both teams played a few extra innings, using certain situations (starting an inning with a runner on second) to give players experience.
There are no official stats or box scores kept by FSU. But here are a few notes:
Marin Heller started at shortstop and Hayley Griggs started at third base. Griggs had a three-run homer and a double. Heller fielded well.
Sophomore left-hander Marlee Gaskell started in the circle and got a pair of strikeouts in the first (one swinging and the second looking). She struggled in the second inning, starting with a leadoff walk and then a fielder’s choice advanced the runner to second. A strikeout in the dirt prompted Anna Hinde to throw down to second instead of making the throw to first for out No. 2. Maybe this was intentional to put more stress on Gaskell and see how she pitched. The runner eventually scored but Gaskell battled.
Right-hander Averi Dockery, another sophomore, pitched three scoreless innings. Dockery enjoyed a 1-2-3 third inning, getting a strikeout on a check swing. In the fourth, she gave up a shallow single to right and a fielder’s choice. But with runners in scoring position, Dockery got out of the inning with a strikeout swinging to strand the runners. And in the fifth, she got a strikeout swinging and Heller snared a hard-hit grounder before firing it to first for the out.
Right-hander Bella Dimitrijevic, a third sophomore, pitched a 1-2-3 sixth. She gave up a solo home run in the seventh. Ashtyn Danley got the third out on a check swing.
Griggs had a well-hit double in the first with two out but was stranded.
McLaine Hudson led off the fifth with a double down the left-field line. Hudson was Kentucky’s top high school player. Stetson transfer Nicole Edmiaston brought Hudson home with a sacrifice fly to tie it up 1-1.
FSU broke through with a seven-run sixth inning. Freshman Kaylee Goodpaster had a no-doubt two-run homer, Griggs had the three-run homer and a string of walks as well as an infield hit brought home two runs.
Hudson added an RBI double in the seventh, scoring Ella Dodge. In the extra innings, Dodge also had an RBI single.
