Florida State hadn’t finished drives in recent losses at Stanford and Clemson. The Seminoles made the most of their limited drives on Saturday.
Tommy Castellanos had a pair of touchdown runs and tossed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Duce Robinson as FSU scored on six straight drives to defeat Virginia Tech 34-14.
The Seminoles (5-5, 2-5 ACC) ran for 230 yards on 45 carries, controlling and draining the clock after a scoreless first quarter.
Robinson caught six passes for 134 yards. The junior now has three straight 100-yard receiving games and five in 2025.
Castellanos completed 12 of 24 passes for 189 yards, and he also ran seven times for 45 yards.
Jerry Wilson had an interception and Mandrell Desir forced a fumble as the Seminoles allowed 238 rushing yards on a night where a bend-but-don’t-break defense was sufficient against the struggling Hokies.
Of note
The Seminoles finished the 2025 home schedule with a 5-2 record, including wins over Alabama, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech.
FSU did not score in the first quarter for a fourth straight game.
Defense
Jerry Wilson had an interception on a long throw toward the end zone by Kyron Drones. Wilson also had a 6-yard tackle for loss that forced VT to try a 54-yard field-goal attempt, which fell short.
Defensive lineman Mandrell Desir forced a fumble with VT driving in FSU territory in the third quarter. Linebacker Blake Nichelson recovered at the FSU 33-yard line.
Shamar Arnoux started and had two tackles in the first half.
VT ran for 238 yards on 41 carries. But Drones struggled to complete passes, throwing for just 125 yards on 10 of 18 passing.
Special teams
Jake Weinberg missed a 34-yard field-goal attempt in the first quarter. He made a 26-yard field-goal attempt in the second quarter and added a 34-yard field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter.
