With scrimmage No. 2 in the books, Florida State’s coaches move into film review mode and begin to contemplate what the depth chart looks like for the 2026 season opener.

FSU’s players will not practice on Monday, but it will be a work day for coach Norvell and the staff to discuss first- and second-team players on both sides of the ball.

“A lot of great film that we're going to be able to evaluate,” Norvell said after the second scrimmage on Sunday night. “Excited to jump into this week and continue to get better as this is going to be a big 'move' week for us as we start to see who's emerging within the depth chart and really working to finalize some of those those personnel groupings as we get ready for game prep here the following week.”

FSU was able to fit in about 100 plays for the second and final scrimmage of the preseason, a night that included some two-minute periods and special teams work. The NCAA allows just two scrimmages, and Norvell said he likes having them early in camp.

“I think some of it is just the work we're able to get in the summer,” Norvell said. “Even though you're not going against each other (offense vs. defense in the summer), you still get the installations. Understanding some of the situational things, I think we're in a really good place. But you want to see guys can go out there and execute and perform.”

Norvell said the defense was the better group on Sunday night. In his opening statement, he said: “Defense really did a nice job flying around, made some explosive plays, created some TFLs.”

Later in the interview, Norvell said: “If you had to pick a winner of the day, I would say the defense definitely won the day and how they played, what they did, but I thought that there's still a lot of really good things that showed up and some areas where we get to get to grow and get better.”

Part of the reason why the defense won the day is likely that quarterbacks and running backs weren’t tackled. Norvell said the running backs were in non-contact jerseys, noting that Texas transfer Tre’ Wisner missed the scrimmage. Running backs coach Kam Martin had previously noted that Wisner missed the first scrimmage.

But two backs who have impressed in camp, Samuel Singleton Jr. and Ousmane Kromah, performed well in Norvell’s view.

“Sam had a had a big run. Ous has been great throughout the course of camp. Tre was out tonight,” Norvell said. “Expecting to get him back here shortly ... We're still contacting. We're still thudding them up. It's good to see swarm tackles on them.”
