Florida State baseball’s draft picks have begun to sign.
Myles Bailey signed with the Chicago Cubs for $1.9 million, which was significantly higher than the slot value for the No. 75 overall pick ($1.12 million). The signing and financials were reported by MLB.com’s Jim Callis on Saturday afternoon. Bailey hit .363 with 13 home runs, 33 RBI and 36 runs in 26 games before a season-ending ankle injury.
Trey Beard, who was drafted in the sixth round by the Miami Marlins, signed for $493,000 (just $2,500 under slot). The signing and financials were reported by Baseball America’s Carlos Collazo. A left-hander, Beard went 6-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 14 games (12 starts) for FSU. He had 97 strikeouts and just 24 walks in 68 innings.
FSU commitment Landon Thome signed for nearly $400,000 under slot but earned a $2.497 million payday from the Chicago White Sox. Thome’s dad, Jim, is in the Hall of Fame and works in the White Sox’s front office.
A large number of draft picks have not yet signed or not announced. Second-round pick Wes Mendes, who was picked by the Houston Astros, is among those whose signing has not yet been announced. His pick has a slot value of $1.68 million.
MLB teams have until July 27 at 5 p.m. to sign draft picks.
