Myles Bailey had “successful surgery” on his left leg on Sunday but his season ends after suffering the injury on a slide into second base.
The sophomore had been one of the best hitters in baseball and arguably the one with the most power in the college game. Not only did he have 13 home runs, Bailey was being intentionally walked more and more and has a .582 on-base percentage.
Florida State coach Link Jarrett made an expected but very difficult announcement on Sunday afternoon.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Myles for a full, speedy recovery,” Jarrett said. “I have not coached a player with a better combination of work ethic, character, and skill. His application of work allowed Myles to develop into a spectacular player both offensively and at first base.
“He has amazing parents, who molded him into a wonderful young man. Our medical team was fully engaged from the moment he was injured. He will recover from this injury and return to his dynamic form."
In 26 games, Bailey hit .363 with 13 home runs and 33 RBI but also 36 runs scored. He had more walks (35) than strikeouts (30) and had developed a more discerning eye at the plate in his sophomore season. A draft-eligible sophomore, Bailey has often been viewed as a top draft pick this summer and it’s plausible we’ve seen him play for the last time in an FSU uniform.
Bailey was also valued for his defense at first base, making just one error and bailing out FSU's infielders with his 6-foot-4 frame to grab high throws.
With Bailey in the heart of the lineup, often the No. 3 spot, the Seminoles (21-6) have won three straight ACC series — taking down top-15 teams in Wake Forest and NC State and grabbed two games vs. Duke. FSU and Duke will face off on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the series finale.
