Day 1 of the MLB Draft was a busy one for Florida State players and a few commitments.

Left-hander Wes Mendes, the ACC pitcher of the year, was selected in the second round by the Houston Astros. His slot value is $1.68 million.

Mendes went 9-3 with a 2.81 ERA and an impressive 1.02 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched). Mendes had a 5-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio (125 to 25) in 93 innings. His ERA dropped from 6.82 as a freshman at Ole Miss to 5.54 as a sophomore at FSU before his breakout season.

Myles Bailey was selected with the 75th pick by the Chicago Cubs. His slot value is $1.12 million. Bailey hit .363 with 13 home runs, 33 RBI and 36 runs in 26 games before a season-ending ankle injury.

In the third round, Brayden Dowd was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The outfielder’s slot value is $915,000. Dowd led the team with 51 walks, giving him an impressive .456 on-base percentage. He also hit 10 home runs, had 13 doubles and was 10 for 10 on stolen-base attempts.

A pair of FSU commitments were selected earlier in the draft.

Landon Thome, the son of Hall of Fame slugger Jim Thome, was selected with the 34th overall pick by the Chicago White Sox. Thome’s slot value is $2.9 million.

Right-hander Kaden Waechter was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the second round. His slot value is $1.76 million.
