Florida State’s rebounding improvement had been evident over the last month.

But Miami was tougher on the boards, with Malik Reneau leading the Hurricanes to 16 offensive boards that produced 25 second-chance points.

Reneau had 23 points and 12 rebounds, including six on the offensive end, as Miami defeated FSU 83-73 on Tuesday night to win round 2 of the rivalry series this season.

The Seminoles (14-14, 7-8 ACC) had won three straight games.

Miami (22-6, 11-4) won it on the boards, dominating FSU 42-23.

“We lost that game because we couldn't rebound with them,” FSU coach Luke Loucks said.

Lajae Jones scored 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting, and Chauncey Wiggins added 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting. Wiggins led FSU with five rebounds.

Miami held Robert McCray V to nine points on 4 of 14 shooting. It was the first time in FSU’s 15 ACC games that McCray had come up short of double figures.

FSU trailed by as many as 10 a few times in the second half, including 54-44 with 13:13 to go. The Seminoles gradually cut down the lead and tied it up when Kobe MaGee made a corner 3 and was fouled. He sank the free-throw attempt, knotting the teams at 57 with 7:54 left.

But Miami made five straight shots from the floor and won an appeal on a goaltending call, which removed two points from FSU’s total. The Hurricanes went back up by 10 with 2:40 to go and, despite FSU’s best efforts, shots didn’t fall down the stretch.

FSU shot 27 of 59 (45.8 percent) from the floor and 8 of 28 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range.

Miami shot 31 of 59 (52.5 percent) from the floor and 9 of 21 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range.

Tre Donaldson, who grew up in Tallahassee and played at Florida High, finished with 21 points on 8 of 16 shooting for Miami.

“He had an unbelievable game,” Loucks said. “He had some timely shots down the stretch.”

FSU’s student allotment was sold out on Monday, and both ends of the court were filled well ahead of tipoff on a night when 10,317 fans came out for a 9 p.m. tip time. The energy inside the Tucker Center was among the best this season, arguably better than against top-25 opponents like Duke and Virginia.
