Florida State finished off an impressive February with a fourth ACC road win.
Robert McCray V scored 20 points while Thomas Bassong had 14 points and a season-high 12 rebounds in FSU's 80-71 win at Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon.
McCray shot 8 of 15 from the floor, including 3 of 4 from beyond the 3-point arc. He added five assists and four rebounds while committing just one turnover. It was the ninth game he scored 20 or more points this season, and McCray bounced back from a nine-point outing in Tuesday's loss to Miami.
Bassong played extended minutes, with the freshman shooting 6 of 8 from the floor. The freshman was just 1 of 4 from the line, but it was by far his best performance of the season. Bassong had eight rebounds in a December win over Jacksonville.
FSU (15-14, 8-8 ACC) improved to 5-2 in February and picked up a fourth ACC road win this month (Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Georgia Tech).
And the Seminoles did it at a place where they have historically struggled. Georgia Tech had won three straight in the series at Atlanta.
“This is a tough place for Florida State to play these last handful of years,” FSU coach Luke Loucks said. “It’s tough anywhere to win on the road in the ACC. I know it wasn’t the prettiest game for us.”
Chauncey Wiggins added 12 points. FSU shot 20 of 34 (58.8 percent) inside the arc and 7 of 26 (26.9 percent) from 3-point range.
Alex Steen had seven points and eight rebounds as the Seminoles won the rebounding edge 44-34.
With Kobe MaGee limited due to an injury, FSU turned to AJ Swinton and Cam Miles for more minutes. Swinton had seven points and three rebounds in 25 minutes, while Miles played for the first time since Feb. 7 and had four points. Miles had impressed Loucks with his shooting, defense and mindset of late.
“He’s a testament to showing up every day with a great attitude and working his tail off,” Loucks said of Miles. “… He’s had five or six straight practices, and it’s not even close, where he was the best performer in practice.”
FSU led by 16 a pair of times in the first half, 37-21 and 40-24, with the second time appearing to be comfortably in front with 4:06 to the break. But FSU went cold and GT went on a 12-1 run to cut the lead to 41-36 at halftime.
Bassong (12 points) and McCray (10 points) led the second-half push, and Georgia Tech went cold for more than five minutes without a bucket from the floor.
