Florida State has suffered a big loss on the recruiting trail.
Blountstown High School running back Amari Thomas decommitted from the Seminoles around noon on Friday. The composite four-star had been committed to Florida State since January, where he pledged to running backs coach David Johnson following back-to-back junior day visits.
Thomas is considered to be the No. 338 prospect in the country and the No. 21 running back per the 247sports composite rankings.
The news comes as South Carolina has made a big push throughout the summer to flip Thomas from Florida State. Thomas took official visits to both Tallahassee and Columbia over the summer, with the former being his final stop before the dead period.
“South Carolina has a good program and I’m not going to lie, they have a chance to be a playoff team this year with who they have coming back. You just never know, December isn’t here (yet) but I’m here with the Noles,” Thomas said on the Gamecocks following his FSU official visit.
While Thomas did not shut down his recruitment and insinuated that it would continue into the fall, a full decommitment from the Seminoles comes at a bit of an odd time. Florida State missed on it’s remaining running back targets during official visits, failing to land either Jae Lamar (Georgia) or Carsyn Baker (Florida) - with Derrek Cooper a definite longshot.
The board at running back will need to be expanded as FSU is now looking to regain Thomas’ commitment while also looking elsewhere. Prospects like three-stars Amari Latimer (committed to Wisconsin) and Li’darious Pryor (uncommitted) could be options that Florida State will now more intensely pursue.
