Florida State began fall ball on-field work in the last few weeks with small groups of players working together and receiving instruction from coaches. But the practices with the full 39-man roster began on Tuesday inside Dick Howser Stadium.
“This time of the fall there's a couple layers to what we try to accomplish,” FSU baseball coach Link Jarrett said. “No. 1 we install some of the team concepts so we can play the game in a clean, safe manner - fly ball communication, cutoffs and relays, your picks, your rundowns, first-and-thirds, bunt defenses. There's 23 new guys on our roster of 39. So that's a pretty good clip and we want to be on the same page.
“As we pivot from group work into team work you start to install holistically some of these things with everybody on the field. That's where we are right now. As you go through the fall you're constantly evaluating what each individual athlete needs from a developmental standpoint. As you grab that info and you start to apply it into what the individual needs to try to maximize his playability and physicality, you start to then move to what positions do people belong in and what does the pitching look like against live hitters.”
Jarrett discussed a number of players on the roster. Among them are Noah Sheffield, who will get work as a middle infielder and outfielder in his second year at FSU. He talks on Myles Bailey, who had a breakout freshman year. Jarrett also discusses some summer ball standouts, among them pitcher Payton Manca and catcher Hunter Carns — both of them all-stars in the Cape Cod League.
Despite losing Jamie Arnold, a first-round pick by the Athletics, Jarrett said: “I think our depth on the mound could be better.”
FSU will play three fall ball games, beginning against Mississippi State in Pensacola on Oct. 18. The Seminoles will also play host to UAB on Oct.25 and hold the Garnet & Gold All-Star Game at home on Oct. 31.
