The No. 7 Florida State softball team run-ruled Elon 9-1 in five innings Sunday to close out the Dugout Club Classic. The Seminoles (12-4) improved to 4-0 all-time against the Phoenix (3-10).
Sophomore Jazzy Francik (6-1) earned the win for Florida State. She faced 12 batters over three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out four. The Seminoles’ pitching staff combined to hold Elon to four hits, one earned run and one walk.
Florida State’s offense totaled 11 hits, eight RBI and three walks. Junior third baseman Jaysoni Beachum led the Seminoles at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior left fielder Ashtyn Danley, also went 3 for 3 with two RBI and one run.
The Seminoles broke through in the second. Makenna Sturgis singled and stole second before Hayley Griggs reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Sturgis to score the game’s first run. Marin Heller grounded out to second to bring in Griggs. Beachum followed with an RBI single to score Angelee Bueno, and Danley added a triple that brought Beachum home from first.
Anna Hinde capped the inning with an RBI single to score Danley and give Florida State a 5-0 lead heading into the third.
Florida State added four runs in the third. With the bases loaded, Beachum lifted a ball to left field to score Shelby McKenzie. An Elon throwing error by Chloe Hatzopoulos allowed Bueno to cross the plate. Danley delivered an RBI single to score Heller, and Madi Frey’s groundout to second drove in Beachum, extending the lead to 9-0.
Elon scored its lone run in the fourth, but freshman Bella Dimitrijevic and Makenna Reid combined to secure the run-rule victory.
