Florida State ran into a Murphy’s law situation: The Seminoles struggled to shoot from 3-point range, around the rim and the free-throw line.

A team will so many new pieces that is still learning on the fly struggled from start to finish.

FSU shot just 28 percent from the floor in the first half and made only 4 of 18 3-pointers, falling behind by 19 points at the break as the misses added up in the Seminoles’ lopsided 107-73 loss to Georgia. The Seminoles lost for the first time at home in 2025-26.

It was the first time this decade that FSU had given up 100 points at home in a game.

Robert McCray had 18 points but he made just 4 of 10 free-throw attempts. Chauncey Wiggins was a bright spot with 15 points on 6 of 13 shooting, although he was 3 of 9 from 3-point range.

FSU (5-3) and Georgia were playing as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge. The Seminoles and Bulldogs were each picked to finish toward the bottom of the league in the preseason predicted order of finish. But any visions of a good matchup quickly evaporated.

SEC schools were dominant in 2024-25, going 2-14. This year’s matchups included Duke’s win over Florida and Syracuse’s upset of Tennessee on Tuesday. UNC played at Kentucky late on Tuesday night, while Louisville at Arkansas and Clemson at Alabama on Wednesday night.

The Seminoles missed too many high-percentage shots around the rim, including one possession where Alex Steen had a pair of 8- to 10-footers inside the lane where he lacked the touch to sink them. The moments were representative of the overall struggles.

After sitting out the first half, AJ Swinton had six points.

FSU, which is undersized in the frontcourt, was outrebounded 48-27. McCray and Steen each had five rebounds.

The Seminoles recovered in the second half and finished the night 39 percent from the floor. But they were just 8 of 30 from 3-point range.

Jeremiah Wilkinson had 22 points and Kanon Catchings had 17 points to lead Georgia.
