The Florida State soccer team showed off a new-look team on Friday night, using 23 players and giving them experience in a 3-2 loss to Sporting Jax. FSU scored a pair of first-half goals before the professional team from Jacksonville scored a goal just before halftime and added two goals in the second half.

Nyanya Touray scored from outside the box for FSU, while Shaneil Buckley added the second goal on the counter attack.

“We played 23 players - 20 field players, three goalkeepers,” FSU coach Brian Pensky said. “Everybody is kind of painting their individual canvas. Coaches, too. We learned a lot about individual players.”

Sophomore Kate Ockene had a few diving stops, going to her left to swat away Sporting Jax’s first effort early on. Ockene also stopped a free kick from just beyond the box.

Savannah Dixon and Fernanda Mayrink also spent time in goal for the Seminoles.

Junior forward Wrianna Hudson, defender Janey Okeke and Touray were named to the preseason All-ACC team and will anchor a team that is No. 4 in the preseason coaches’ poll. FSU is the defending national champion but the roster is loaded with transfers and freshmen.

“We are a brand new team. That’s no excuse,” Pensky said. “But I just said to our team, ‘We’re up 2-0, we’re in a pretty good spot. Even though this feeling right now is kind of gross, I would much rather feel what we’re feeling and experience what we just experienced than winning the game 3-0, 4-0 going away.’ “

FSU opens the regular season at Stetson on Aug. 13 (live stream on ESPN+) and then plays at FIU on Aug. 16 (ESPN+). The Seminoles play Florida Atlantic in their home opener on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. (ACC Network Extra).
