Forced to play different rotations and at times smaller lineups without forward Chauncey Wiggins, the Seminoles struggled early before adjusting in the second half.
And some of the younger Seminoles made the most of their minutes, too.
Freshman Cam Miles scored 15 of his season-best 17 points in the second half and Robert McCray had 16 points and seven assists as FSU pulled away after halftime to take an 87-73 win over UT Martin.
McCray was 4 of 8 and Miles shot 3 of 6 from 3-point range. Miles had an impressive cross-over dribble and finished with a step-back 3-pointer.
Sophomore AJ Swinton returned from suspension and had 12 points on 5 of 9 shooting, including a few acrobatic dunks.
And sophomore Martin Somerville had six points — making a pair of 3-pointers — and finished with five assists. Somerville showed he can create opportunities for teammates in the half-court offense.
FSU (3-1) played without Wiggins, who suffered a foot/ankle injury in the loss at Florida a week ago. Wiggins was sitting on FSU’s bench and didn’t have a visible brace or boot.
Alex Steen was FSU’s most productive big man. The Florida Southern transfer had 13 points on 6 of 9 shooting with seven rebounds. Alier Maluk added four points and four rebounds.
Lajae Jones struggled from the floor but instead drove and created free-throw opportunities, making 7 of 10 from the line. FSU shot just 13 of 23 from the line.
FSU forced UT Martin into 26 turnovers, which sparked 33 points for the Seminoles. On the flip side, FSU had 21 assists and six turnovers.
The Seminoles again struggled on the boards without Wiggins. UT Martin won the rebounding margin 41-33, with the Skyhawks pulling down 11 offensive boards that led to 10 second-chance points.
FSU honored longtime coach Leonard Hamilton with a halftime ceremony on the court. Hamilton is a UT Martin graduate and coached at FSU from 2002-2025.
