Florida State has had some impressive halves this season. But the Seminoles put up a 18-of-23 shooting performance in the second half en route to a road victory.
Martin Somerville scored 18 of his 23 points in the second half as FSU built a big lead with a 13-0 run and cruised to a 92-69 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon. Somerville shot 9 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 6 from 3-point range.
A transfer from UMass Lowell, Somerville had 23 points in a home win over Jacksonville but he had struggled in a 3-of-25 slump over the last four games. Somerville didn’t score a point against Stanford or Virginia, but on Saturday he had his best game against an ACC team.
FSU had a balanced scoring output. Chauncey Wiggins scored 19 points on 7 of 10 shooting, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Lajae Jones had 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting, while Robert McCray V added 17 points on 5 of 12 shooting. McCray V has now surpassed 1,500 career points, and he’s closing in on 400 at FSU this season.
The Seminoles (12-13, 5-7 ACC) won their third ACC road game and are 5-2 in their last seven games.
Va. Tech was hot early, shooting 15 of 30 from the floor, and held a 42-39 lead at the half. But the Seminoles defended well in the second half, holding the Hokies to 9 of 25 from the floor.
The Hokies (17-9, 6-7) needed a win to keep the push toward the NCAA Tournament going, but those hopes took a hit on Saturday.
FSU finished 12 of 23 from 3-point range, far more efficient and productive than the 6 of 33 night against Virginia in a 61-58 loss.
