Florida State fared well with an Australian punter when Alex Mastromanno signed six years ago. The Seminoles are trying again with a transfer punter.

Daniel Hughes, a Ray Guy Award semifinalist at New Mexico for two years, has committed to FSU. Hughes averaged 45.9 yards per punt and 43.3 net yards per punt.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Hughes has two years of eligibility remaining. Why did Hughes pick FSU?

"The coaching staff, the facilities, the opportunity to continue to grow as a player and most of all the opportunity alone to play at FSU," Hughes said in a direct message to the Osceola on Thursday afternoon.

While Jake Weinberg returns for 2026, FSU is rebuilding its specialists group. Punter Mac Chiumento transferred and has landed at Texas. Kicker Brunno Reus is also in the transfer portal. FSU has also received a commitment from North Dakota State long snapper Caleb Bowers.

FSU has been active in the transfer portal by receiving commitments from offensive linemen Paul Bowling, Bradyn Joiner and Nate Pabst along with quarterback Ashton Daniels, running back Tre Wisner, tight end Desirio Riles, defensive lineman Rylan Kennedy and cornerback Nehemiah Chandler.
