Expected changes to the 2027 and ‘28 football schedules are now official as Florida State and Georgia agreed to cancel their home-and-home games.
With the ACC and SEC moving toward nine-game league schedules, playing a pair of FSU-Georgia games became a difficult hurdle. Georgia has an annual rivalry game with Georgia Tech, while FSU has a rivalry game with Florida.
Thursday’s announcement by both schools said administrators are “now in discussion to play a neutral-site matchup soon.” Previous reporting by the Athens Banner-Herald indicated a single game could be played in Tampa.
“As we considered the effects of evolving scheduling mandates within both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference, we have mutually agreed that it is in the best interest of both schools to cancel our home-and-home series scheduled for 2027 and 2028,” FSU athletics director Michael Alford said in a statement. “We are now discussing playing a future neutral-site contest, and we are optimistic we will get that done. Importantly, this change will not reduce the total home games on our schedule moving forward.”
This was among a series of games FSU administrators booked with SEC schools, beginning with LSU (2022-23) and Alabama (2025-26).
FSU has a 2027 home game booked with East Tennessee State and will play at Florida. The 2028 schedule will feature the Gators in Tallahassee. FSU plays host to Notre Dame in 2029.
The FSU schedule in 2026 includes four non-conference games, notably a game at Alabama and vs. Florida in Tallahassee, and eight ACC games. But in subsequent years the Seminoles are expected to play nine ACC games.
FSU opens its 2026 schedule with New Mexico State on Aug. 29 (Week Zero) in Doak Campbell Stadium and follows with SMU on Sept. 7. A new rule in college football will also allow for all FBS programs to play on Week Zero beginning in 2027.
