Miles Russell finished with his best round of the U.S. Open, a 70, on Sunday. But it also included a par on 18 on a hole that included a memorable walk with his dad, Joe.
Before the round, Russell asked for and was given approval by the U.S. Open's Rules Committee to have his dad caddie for the final hole. Joe Russell didn't know what was planned. But when Miles teed off at the 18th hole and began walking up the fairway, his caddie, Ramon Bescansa, walked over to Joe, set down Miles' bag and took off his bib.
Joe put the bib on and grabbed the bag, walking up the fairway with his 17-year-old son.
“It was kind of a fun Father’s Day gift,” Miles Russell told reporters after Sunday’s round. “Kind of cool since it was my first one. Hopefully it’s something he’ll remember for a long time.”
A Florida State commitment, Miles began playing golf as a 2-year-old and watched as Joe gave him tips. Miles shot 72-71-74-70, impressively making the cut as an amateur and competing against a field full of professionals at the U.S. Open.
Russell finished tied for 39th at the U.S. Open (full leaderboard).
