A very long day at the ballpark came to an abrupt end on Saturday at 8:40 p.m. as the Florida State-Coastal Carolina game — already twice delayed by lengthy rain delays — was postponed until Sunday at 11 a.m.
Cal Fisher hit a 399-foot homer over the scoreboard in left field in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving FSU 2-1 lead. A few minutes later, before the Chants came to the plate in the top of the sixth, a rain delay of more than two hours began.
Water pooled in shallow center field and left field before eventually draining. Players hung out alongside the dugouts and roughly 1,000 fans were still inside Howser when the game was postponed. The outfield drained quickly, but it also became evident that coaches and administrators were concerned about the safety of Howser after so much rain.
With the postseason fate of FSU and Coastal Carolina on the line, the teams will have to go home and sleep before returning to the field to play Sunday at 11 a.m. (TV or streaming to be determined).
FSU started Wes Mendes, who pitched four innings and gave up just one earned run on two hits and a walk. He had eight strikeouts. Mendes worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout to end the first, and he got a strikeout to end the second inning on a 95 mph fastball.
Right-hander Brodie Purcell pitched a hitless fifth inning.
Nathan Cmeyla had an RBI double off the screen in right-center field, bringing home Hunter Carns, in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Brayden Dowd also struck out on a 12-pitch at-bat early in the game, with third base coach Ty Megahee being ejected by the home plate umpire. The SEC Tournament was given the approval to test automatic balls and strikes (ABS) appeals, but the system is not in place for the NCAA Regionals.
The extra day of rest buys the coaching staffs from both teams time to evaluate their pitching options. FSU used top right-handers Chris Knier and John Abraham on Friday. Abraham has not pitched in two games on the same weekend, but he could be looked to throw in a game on Sunday (or perhaps Monday).
A full schedule for the Tallahassee Regional has not been set for Sunday, although the tournament could go well into Monday now due to rain delays on Friday and Saturday.
