Florida State has hired Tom Herman, 51, to the football coaching staff.
Herman brings a broad array of offensive experience to the staff, serving seven institutions in an assistant capacity as well as the Chicago Bears (offensive analyst) and three universities (Houston, Texas and Florida Atlantic) as a head coach.
A member of Mensa International, the former all-conference receiver has coached wide receivers, offensive line and quarterbacks.
Herman served as an offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Texas State (2005-6), Rice 2007-8, Iowa State (2009-11) and Ohio State (2012-14) under Urban Meyer.
His offenses were highly productive. At Texas State his offense led the Southland conference in total offense and in 2005 ranked No. 8 nationally in scoring. Rice ranked in the Top 10 nationally in 2008 (No. 5 passing offense 327.8, T-8th scoring offense 41.6, total offense 10th 472.3).
In 2014, OSU won the national title with the 4th-ranked offense in the nation (with two backup quarterbacks) and Herman was awarded the Frank Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in the nation.
In his first season as a head coach (2015), No. 14 Houston went 11-1 to win the AAC title and beat No. 9 Florida State 38-24 in the Peach Bowl.
Herman was hired by the University of Texas for the 2017 season at a reported salary of $5 million and led Texas to a 9-3 regular season and defeated Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, the first 10-win season since 2009. But Herman's welcome wore thin following a 7-5 regular season in 2019 and after a 7-3 start to the 2020 season, Herman was dismissed.
Herman served the Chicago Bears as an offensive analyst and special projects coach in 2021 but was not retained for the 2022 season and took the Florida Atlantic head job following the dismissal of Willie Taggart in 2022. Herman was fired after going 6-16 in two seasons.
Herman, a Cincinnati, Ohio native, who grew up in Simi Valley, earned his BS at California Lutheran College, where he was an all-conference receiver and graduated with honors in 1997.
FSU has not formally announced Herman’s hire or what his role will be with the coaching staff. Coach Mike Norvell will meet with the media on Wednesday at the ACC Kickoff event in Charlotte, N.C.
