Florida State added running back depth in the offseason to strengthen the room and be better prepared in the event of an injury. That depth will already be tested in September.
Roydell Williams will miss an indefinite amount of time due to injury, coach Mike Norvell announced on Monday. Williams' injury is not season-ending, but he started against Alabama and had 14 yards on six carries.
The Alabama transfer had a 4-yard run on fourth-and-1 in the fourth quarter to help FSU sustain a drive that resulted in a touchdown as FSU extended its lead to 31-17.
"I absolutely hate it for the young man," Norvell said. "He was a great factor in the game the other day, the fourth-down run in our own end of the field, he showed power. He showed toughness. He was a great contributor in that win."
FSU has adjusted its depth chart at running back, with Oklahoma transfer Gavin Sawchuk now listed as the starter. Jaylin Lucas and Ousmane Kromah are the co-starters at the other running back spot on FSU's depth chart.
The Seminoles have good depth at running back, adding Sawchuk out of the portal after spring practice and signing Kromah in December.
Sawchuk had six carries for 28 yards, including a tough 14-yard touchdown run where he fought through a number of Alabama defenders en route to the end zone.
Lucas had six carries for 22 yards as well as two receptions for 66 yards, including a 64-yard catch-and-run that set up Caziah Holmes' touchdown.
Kromah had seven carries for 31 yards, including a physical 14-yard run.
FSU can also turn to Holmes and sophomore Kam Davis, who did not play against Alabama. Norvell said Davis, who is now listed on the depth chart as a backup, has been improving. In the preseason, running backs coach David Johnson said Davis needs to improve on his pass blocking.
There were a few minor depth chart updates on Monday. Darrell Desir has been added as a co-backup with Jaden Jones at defensive end (behind starter James Williams). FSU also added a defensive tackle spot, notating Daniel Lyons as the starter and Mandrell Desir as the backup.
Edwin Joseph is now the definitive starter at one safety spot, with K.J. Kirkland as the backup. They had been listed as co-starters before the Alabama game.
