The No. 10 Florida State softball team (30-4, 7-0 ACC) took the series opener at Clemson 4-1 in front of a packed McWhorter Stadium on Friday night in Clemson, S.C.
Jazzy Francik got the start for the Semionles and shined early on and allowed just one hit through three innings. Francik found trouble in the fourth as the Tigers (23-11, 6-4) loaded the bases with one out, but Makenna Reid calmed the waters with two flyouts. The Tigers did score a run on a sac fly, but that was the only run the Tigers would get as the combination of Francik, Reid and Ashtyn Danley allowed just four hits.
FSU got runners on base in the first four innings but finally broke through in the fourth as Danley and Bella Ruggiero led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and Shelby McKenzie picked up a RBI for the ninth-consecutive game with a single up the middle to score Danley. Kennedy Harp drove home Ruggiero on a groundout, and Marin Heller doubled to right field to put the Noles up 3-1.
The Seminoles added one more insurance run in the seventh inning as Hayley Griggs picked up her second hit of the night on an infield single. After a fielder’s choice, Isa Torres stole second to get herself in scoring position for Jaysoni Beachum who delivered with a single to right field to put the Seminoles up 4-1.
The leadoff runner got on for Clemson in the bottom of the seventh, but Danley forced a double play and a groundout to end the game.
