After a 2-0 start to the season — including a 31-17 upset over Alabama — Florida State is trying to turn momentum on the field into momentum on the recruiting trail.

Mike Norvell and the Seminoles have a top-15 class in both major recruiting service rankings, holding the No. 13 class in the 247sports rankings and the No. 15 class in the On3/Rivals rankings.

And there is the potential to add more as Florida State is beginning to pick up communication with some committed targets that they failed to hit on the first go around. The coaching staff took to the road over the bye week and visited nearly every commit in the class, including targets that are still being pursued by other programs.

“We have had a lot of confidence throughout this last spring, summer, big expectations within this building of what that would be,” Norvell said on Monday about his visits with prospects on Thursday and Friday. “When you share that and talk about that with guys that you are projecting to what they can be within this program, it's always good to see that start to continue to unfold and get out and watch games.”

Here is an organized group of prospects committed to other programs that Florida State is pursuing and/or could pick up communication with as the season goes on.

UCLA OT commit Johnnie Jones Jr.

Florida State missed out on Jones the first time after Jones chose UCLA following a wave of official visits that included stops to Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Colorado in addition to UCLA and FSU.

Florida State whiffed on its other top targets at tackle and immediately circled back on the composite four-star.

Things just got a lot easier as during the writing of this article, Jones decommitted from UCLA as the program fired Deshaun Foster after an 0-3 start to the season.

Jones was slated to attend the FSU vs. Alabama game on Aug. 30 but did not make the trip due to his high school team (Venice High School) playing in Miami.

A visit has not been scheduled as of yet, but with Florida State being the only in-state school that remained in the running with Jones initially, FSU could be in a great position.

Texas RB commit Derrek Cooper

According to reports by both 247sports and On3, Cooper is eyeing a visit to Tallahassee for the Miami game on Oct. 4.

The composite four-star running back is one of the most coveted prospects in the state of Florida as well as the country, and he chose Texas in the summer despite not taking an official visit. Cooper will be officially visiting Texas during the Sept. 20 weekend, but if Cooper doesn’t fully shut down things can get interesting.

Florida State has hung around in Cooper’s recruitment, but they haven’t truly been a contender since going 2-10. And it’s quite possible that Cooper is there to see Miami more than he is Florida State if he does indeed make the trip.

Mike Norvell went to see Cooper at Chaminade Madonna earlier this week, as well as check in on four-star WR commit Jasen Lopez.

If FSU continues to win, do you they have the momentum and the resources to haul in a big fish?

Georgia Tech edge commit Chris Carbin

Carbin was offered on July 23, well after Florida State had missed on the initial targets on their edge board. But the offer by Florida State had held weight with the current Georgia Tech commitment. Carbin took the first opportunity available to visit Florida State after the dead period ended by attending the Alabama game.

Carbin will be back on campus for an official visit during the Miami game. While Florida State may not have to win that game in order to win over Carbin — who clearly is interested in the Seminoles — a good showing against a rival may be enough to complete the flip.

Florida safety commit Kaiden Hall

Hall was a Florida State fan growing up, but it was the Gators that beat out Florida State and Alabama for Hall during official visits.

But with the Gators’ shocking loss to USF in the Swamp, it may have opened the door for Florida State to swoop back in. Sources have shared with On3’s Matt LaSerre that Florida State has been in contact with Hall and the four-star is mulling taking a visit to Tallahassee, possibly for the Miami game.

Hall is projected as a rover in Tony White’s defense. If current Florida State commit Tedarius Hughes were to decommit (he is one of the primary defensive backs still taking other visits), Hall would be an ideal prospect to turn to.

Syracuse edge commit Kamron Wilson

Florida State led for Wilson before he suddenly committed to Syracuse in the spring and the Orange have held his pledge ever since. The Seminoles have stayed in his recruitment, but to varying degrees as other programs have often pushed harder and more frequently.

Florida State may be playing the long game but this is a recruitment that many feel FSU can win. 247sports and On3 are reporting that Wilson will be at the Miami game, but not as an official visitor.

Florida RB commit Carsyn Baker

Florida State is on the hunt for a running back commit in the class after the flipping of Amari Thomas to South Carolina. It came down to Florida and Florida State for Carsyn Baker back in June and the Gators won out initially.

But things are not off to the best start in Gainesville and Florida State has reached out to Baker and are pushing for a visit. Whether or not that visit transpires is up in the air.

Baker isn’t the only running back flip that FSU is after. Wisconsin pledge Amari Latimer is the cousin of former FSU football player Ermon Lane and has expressed interest in Florida State previously. There was some conversation around Latimer getting to the Alabama game, but talks of a visit have cooled recently. The family is by all accounts taking everything into consideration but the pledge to the Badgers still appears to be solid for now.

Other Notes

Florida State is actively reaching out to more prospects to add to the class. The Seminoles have been in contact with multiple prospects that were formerly committed to or are currently committed to both Virginia Tech and UCLA.

The Seminoles have been in contact with five-star receiver and Syracuse commit Calvin Russell as well as five-star edge and LSU commit Trenton Henderson (among others big names) early this month.

Norvell took in multiple games over the weekend, including watching Jasen Lopez in South Florida on Thursday and then Devin Carter on Friday night.

Terrance Knighton stopped in Georgia to see his two prized defensive line commitments in Tico Crittendon and Earnest Rankings, both of whom are still being pursued by other programs.
