Florida State bounced back in a big way with three home runs to take game 2 of its series with NC State.
Myles Bailey hit a pair of home runs and Brayden Dowd had a grand slam in the sixth to put the game out of reach and give the Seminoles an 11-5 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Seminoles overcame four errors, which in part prompted an early day for starter Trey Beard.
Dowd’s slam extended FSU’s lead to 11-4 in the sixth, and it came just after NC State went to the bullpen and brought in right-hander Collins Black.
FSU (18-4, 4-1 ACC) had 14 hits, although the Seminoles had 10 strikeouts one night after striking out 15 in Friday’s loss.
Bailey went 3 for 4 with three RBI and three runs scored. He also had a bloop double and is hitting .366 on the season. Bailey has hit a home run in four straight games and now has 12 on the season.
John Stuetzer went 3 for 5 with an RBI single, a double and two runs scored.
Chase Williams got his first start in weeks and went 2 for 4 with an RBI double off the screen in right-center field.
The strike zone was often debated, especially from the FSU dugout. Pitching coach Micah Posey appeared to be commenting to the umpire during a mound visit with Beard and the infielders. Shortly later, coach Link Jarrett also pleaded his case from the dugout.
NC State coach Elliott Avent was also ejected for arguing an out call when a Wolfpack runner was caught stealing.
Beard lasted just 3.2 innings, running into trouble with traffic on the bases. He gave up four runs (just one earned) on four walks and seven strikeouts.
Chris Knier (1-0) tossed 1.1 shutout innings, walking two batters. He did not allow a hit.
Brodie Purcell worked four innings, giving up three hits and striking out five. He allowed just a solo home run in the eighth. Purcell earned his second save.
Shortstop Cal Fisher had two errors for a second straight night. Eli Putnam also had two errors.
NC State dropped to 18-5, 3-2.
