DJ Lagway found success against Florida State on the football field. And after beating the Seminoles twice, he could be joining them.

Lagway wrapped up his official visit on Monday afternoon and the Florida quarterback transfer shared his excitement about what’s next for him. After arriving in Tallahassee late on Sunday night, Lagway made it to FSU’s campus early in the morning.

The quarterback spent time with FSU’s coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. And Malzahn had some game film for him of one of his top quarterbacks to watch.

“He’s seen some things, similarities to me and Cam (Newton),” Lagway said. “He had some cut ups for me. We watched some ball. That was probably my favorite part of the whole visit.”

Lagway smiled often in an interview with FSU writers and said he was on “cloud 9.” The quarterback also spent time with current FSU players. Duce Robinson, a 1,000-yard receiver who will return for his senior season in 2026, was among the Seminoles who spent time in the football building with Lagway on Monday.

Lagway passed for 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 2025. His completion percentage improved from 59.9 in 2024 to 63.2 last fall, but Lagway’s 14 interceptions led the SEC. Lagway has had an up-and-down career, and his sophomore season at Florida includes a win over a top-10 team (Texas) and a rival (FSU) but also struggles in a 4-8 season.

When told that FSU fans were debating if Lagway is a fit in a Malzahn offense and asked how he sees himself fitting in the scheme, he smiled.

“I don’t really know what the fans really say,” Lagway said. “But I know the type of player I am. And I know the type of skill set that I’ve always brought. Put on the high school tape — that’s the type of player I am. I want to be used that way. …

“I’ve always been a true dual-threat guy. Since I got to Florida, that’s when it kind of changed.”

Lagway had 237 rushing yards in two years at Florida. He said injuries weren’t really much of a factor in how much he ran in Gainesville.

“Cut on the high school tape, you’ll see it,” Lagway said. “I’m excited to continue to grow the relationship with coach Malzahn.”

Lagway will visit Virginia next, likely later on Monday night, and he stated other visits could be in the works.

Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels also arrived at FSU for a visit on Monday morning. Daniels completed 68 of 119 passes (57.1 percent) for 797 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in 2025 at Auburn. He previously was at Stanford, passing for 3,986 yards and 21 touchdowns from 2022-24.
