Welcome to our new site

Good morning and welcome to the latest iteration of The Osceola!

If something looks a little different, it’s because a lot has changed in 60 days.

A couple of months ago news broke that On3 had bought Rivals and instinctively we smelled a change a coming. Soon thereafter we learned On3 would merge the Rivals site, and all its subscribers, into their own On3 site at Warchant.

A logical business decision but one that forced The Osceola to the drawing board once again to build a new site and a subscriber base. After some head scratching, looking for a compelling reason to subscribe, we found the answer and it was right in our DNA.

While new tools excite us, tools aren’t compelling. I believe what readers want is to have fun, hope, inspiration, to fall in love with our teams. And they want to trust someone to turn the light on when there’s darkness.

Am I wrong?

The light switch is dependable reporting that done right sheds light on the turbulent times that come and go in collegiate athletics and can suck the love out us.

Solid reporting is in The Osceola’s DNA. And with 40-plus years of covering this program, we offer seasoned perspectives intended to increase the fun and reduce the drama.

Fair warning: I need to warn you this iteration of The Osceola is a shotgun wedding. Please be patient with us as we have a crawl-walk-run game plan heading into football season. Our message board forums fall into the “coming soon” category as it isn’t quite ready to walk down the aisle. In the meantime, please comment and interact at the bottom of each story. We plan to have the board up later this month as well as some cool features we’re itching to release.

Please tell us what you like. And love us enough to tell us what you hate. Being nimble is a benefit of being small and independent. And for goodness’ sake, please take advantage of our 50 percent off discount as a subscriber.

It’s July 1, the beginning of a new era for college athletics

It's July 1, the beginning of a new era for college athletics. FSU athletics and departments around the country, don't operate at a profit. But now FSU administrators and others around the nation adapt with the House-NCAA case to allocate up to $22.5 million in revenue with athletes.

In FSU's case, BOT chair Peter Collins and athletics director Michael Alford were among those who worked with the state's Board of Governors to use university surplus funds for the next three years. Jerry Kutz writes on FSU's efforts.

  • FSU alum Parker Messick will participate in the All-Star Futures Game on July 12 in Atlanta. The Cleveland Guardians left-hander, who is pitching for the team's Triple-A affiliate, has 83 strikeouts and 36 walks in 68 innings. Messick is 4-3 with a 3.71 ERA, and opponents are batting just .225 against him.

The 2025 All-Star Futures Game will be played at 4 p.m. on July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta. It will air live on MLB Network and will be simulcast on MLB.TV.

  • FSU landed a commitment from the top-ranked junior in the class of 2027 in Jacksonville Beach native Miles Russell. He’s considered one of the top junior golfers in recent memory and has already competed on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Russell posted on Instagram: “Beyond excited to announce my commitment to Florida State University! I’m incredibly grateful to my family for their endless support, my friends, Coach Ramon Bescansa for everything he’s done to help me along the way and Coach Jones for this amazing opportunity. Can’t wait to get to Tallahassee — Go Noles!”

  • Jalen Ramsey was traded from the Miami Dolphins to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ramsey, who spent the last two seasons in Miami, helped create a fun throwback video on Twitter/X to “break my own news!” of the trade.

The 6-foot-1, 208-pound corner has 24 interceptions in nine seasons. Drafted by Jacksonville in 2016, he is beginning his 10th season and is joining his fourth team (Ramsey also played for the LA Rams from 2019-2022).

  • It’s FSU takeover day on the ACC Network. The Seminoles’ 2013 national championship win over Auburn (hi, coach Malzahn!) will air at 9 p.m. Baseball and softball games will also be televised throughout the afternoon and evening.

Did You Know?

FSU is the only school in NCAA history to finish in the Top 5 of both football and baseball in the same year - they've done it FIVE times! (1991, 1993, 1995, 1996, and 1999).

The Seminoles are one of only two schools to win national championships in football, baseball, and basketball - cementing their status as a true three-sport powerhouse.

Bobby Bowden guided the Seminoles to 14 straight years of top-4 finishes.
