From the first 20 minutes, the Florida State men’s basketball team showed this is a new era: The Seminoles raced up and down the court, taking 3-point shots and good looks from the interior.

FSU had 58 points at the half, more than in any half in the 2024-25 season. The Seminoles made their 11th 3-pointer early in the second half, surpassing the single-game total of any team last season.

And FSU’s season-best point total was 92, a number the team exceeded with ease in the 108-76 win over Alcorn State on Tuesday night.

Chauncey Wiggins scored a career-high 22 points, drilling 7 of 14 shots from the floor, and Robert McCray V had 12 points and an FSU-record 17 assists. McCray had just two turnovers, too.

“Some people don't even consider him a point guard. A lot of people coming out of Jacksonville thought he was more of a shooting guard,” first-year FSU coach Luke Loucks said. “For him to put on that display, 17 assists, the way he broke down the game. More impressively only two turnovers. It's hard to share the ball the way he did and not turn the ball over. I don't care who you're playing.”

Wiggins, Magee and Martin Somerville each made a trio of 3-pointers.

Loucks’ first game as FSU’s coach was a resounding success, a fun and fast-paced style of basketball that the crowd enjoyed. FSU shot 39 of 70 (55.7 percent) from the floor and 13 of 30 (43.3 percent) from 3-point range, distributing 23 assists with just eight turnovers.

The Seminoles last scored 100 points in a November 2021 regular-season game. With Loucks’ preferred pace, the Seminoles will be pushing 90 or more points as often as they can.

Lajae Jones added 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting and a team-high seven rebounds.

Alex Steen had 12 points and six rebounds. Cam Miles had 10 points and two assists. Somerville had nine points, while Thomas Bassong had eight points and five rebounds.

Wiggins also had five rebounds.

“I was really pleased with Chauncey’s overall game,” Loucks said. “He has size but he has skill and he’s smart and he’s a senior. All of those things bode well for us. We need that experience. We need his versatility. We put him at the 5 at times. His pick and pop was great, a couple top-of-the key 3s. And then off the ball as a 4 and a wing. Even as a 3 we would slide him down at times.”

FSU used a 20-5 run in the first half to take a 34-20 lead was never really threatened against Alcorn State, which was led by Jake Morton (an assistant on Leonard Hamilton’s team in 2024-25).
