Watson no-hits Howard as FSU rolls in opener

Florida State had a late start but made quick work of it sopening-round opponent.

Danielle Watson tossed a five-inning no-hitter as Florida State routed Howard 8-0 in the NCAA Regional on Friday night. Jahni Kerr had three RBI on the night as he Seminoles put the game away with a combined seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

“I thought she was pounding the zone pretty good,” Coach Lonni Alameda said. “She actually had a rib out the last couple weeks. She got her rib replaced back in and now there’s a little more fluidity in her motion.”

Watson (17-4) had five strikeouts and allowed just one walk. The senior right-hander was also the No. 6 pick by the USSSA Pride earlier on Friday.

Jahni Kerr drew a bases loaded walk in the first inning, scoring the first run.

Devyn Flaherty drew a leadoff hit by pitch in the fourth and quickly stole second and third. Kerr drove in Flaherty with an RBI single. Chloe Culp and Josie Muffley later added sacrifice flies and FSU led 4-0.

FSU tacked on four runs in the fifth to end the game on the mercy rule. Mack Leonard smacked an RBI double, Kerr hit a sac fly, Michaela Edenfield had an RBI single and Culp added an RBI single to end the game, which started at 9:10 p.m due to the USF-Mississippi State game running late.

The Seminoles (53-5) had seven stolen bases. They will play South Florida on Saturday at 1 p.m. TV information is to be determined. The FSU – Howard box score can be viewed here.

South Florida 4, Mississippi State 0

Georgina Corrick tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out nine as South Florida defeated Mississippi State on Friday in the first game of the Tallahassee Regional. Corrick (37-5) allowed just four hits and three walks. She threw 121 pitches and lowered her ERA to 0.50.

Josie Foreman went 3 for 3 with a home run for the Bulls (45-14).

Paige Cook had two hits for Mississippi State (33-25), which will play Howard at 3:30 p.m.
