Antonio Velez became the first Florida State baseball player to sign as an undrafted free agent, agreeing to a deal with the Miami Marlins.
Velez went 1-0 with a 0.52 ERA in 2020. He allowed just one earned run in 17.1 innings pitched, with 21 strikeouts and three walks.
In the 2019 postseason, Velez was a key piece of helping the Seminoles get to the College World Series. He went 5-2 with a 4.17 ERA but in the postseason allowed just two runs in 10 innings (eight appearances) with 13 strikeouts. Velez picked up the victories in both of FSU’s games at LSU in the Baton Rouge Super Regional.
Velez was one of a few seniors on FSU’s 2020 roster. Left-hander Clayton Kwiatkowski, right-hander Chase Haney and first baseman Nico Baldor also could opt to sign or return to FSU in 2021.
Right-hander CJ Van Eyk was picked in the second round by the Toronto Blue Jays and Shane Drohan in the fifth round by the Boston Red Sox. While neither deal has been announced by the respective teams, both are expected to sign.
