Va. Tech officially hires Marve

Florida State assistant coach Chris Marve is officially on the move, becoming the defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech on Tuesday afternoon.

Marve had been considering a few coaching options and will join Brent Pry at Virginia Tech. Pry coached Marve for a season at Vanderbilt.

The 32-year-old Marve had been FSU’s linebackers coach / defensive run game coordinator for the last two seasons. But he did not go on the road recruiting over the weekend as he considered his coaching options.

Coach Mike Norvell and FSU’s administration were able to apply for a waiver so that analyst Randy Shannon could go on the road recruiting last weekend. The early signing period begins on Dec. 15, and the FSU staff has been busy on the road visiting commitments as well as targets for the 2022 class.

Norvell enjoyed staff continuity from year 1 to year 2 at FSU. At Memphis, at least one staff member changed each year.

It’s not clear who Norvell will use to fill the spot, but there are options he could consider on the current staff.

Shannon has been a head coach at Miami (2007-10) as well as a defensive coordinator at a number of stops, including Miami, UCF and Florida. Analyst Shane Burnham has also been a defensive line coach at UCF, Rutgers, Iowa State and other schools. Analyst Sabbath Joseph played linebacker at USF and has been a defensive coordinator at Miami Central.
