Florida State coach Willie Taggart held an impromptu interview with the media on Wednesday morning before practice about his comments on the team’s conditioning.

Taggart wanted to clarify his comments, reading the transcript of what he said about hydration and conditioning from Monday’s coach’s show with host Gene Deckerhoff. The coach said “some folks insinuated some words that I said,” at first beginning to read from a transcript of his comments and taking breaks to drink from a bottle of water.

The coach wanted to clarify that his comments were not about Boise, “an excuse for losing.” It was in regards to how the team was preparing for ULM and that he wanted to see the players hydrate more earlier in the week. He said his comments were not a criticism of FSU’s training staff.

Taggart typically doesn’t speak to the media on Wednesdays. But he took the opportunity to speak with reporters before practice. He spoke on a wide range of topics, one of which was looking for improvement on defense.

“We want to play good defense,” Taggart said. “We looked at the things we did wrong. We corrected them and I think you’ll see an improvement out of our football team.”

Taggart was also asked if FSU will have a full-time defensive assistant coach in the press box on Saturday. Against Boise, FSU had a graduate assistant in the press box but defensive assistants Harlon Barnett, Odell Haggins, Mark Snyder and Raymond Woodie were on the sideline.

“Yes, we do have a plan,” Taggart said. “You’ll see this Saturday.”

  • FSU released an updated depth chart on Wednesday morning that does not include defensive back Levonta Taylor. It’s not clear if there is an injury or another reason. Cyrus Fagan is listed as the starter at safety. True freshman Akeem Dent, who enrolled early, is listed as the backup.
  • Defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett usually speaks to reporters on Wednesdays, which was part of his schedule in 2018 and was something he did last week before the Boise game. His interview ahead of ULM was postponed until Thursday.
