Scouting report: Duke

The Blue Devils are by far the ACC’s best team and are the No. 6 team in the AP poll this week. We take a quick look at Duke, which will play at FSU on Tuesday. We wrote our midseason report on the Seminoles on Sunday.

Time/TV: 9 p.m. on ESPN.

Series: Duke has won five straight. FSU is 7-16 at home against the Blue Devils. The Seminoles’ last win came in Jan. 2017 (88-72).

Last meeting: Cam Reddish hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds for an 80-78 win over FSU in Jan. 2019, while Duke also won the 2019 ACC Tournament title game 73-63 vs. FSU. The teams were set to face off in 2020-21 but it was canceled due to COVID.

Duke’s star: Paolo Banchero (6-10 freshman) has scored 20 or more points in three straight games, and his 17.9-point average leads all true freshmen in Division I.

Supporting cast: Mark Williams (7-1 center) leads the ACC in blocks (3.44). He nearly had a triple double (19 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks) in 27 minutes against NC State. Wendell Moore (6-5 forward) averages 15.4 points, 5.7 rebounds. Trevor Keels (6-5 guard) averages 12.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists.

Defensive intensity: Duke has held five straight teams to 30 percent or worse shooting from 3-point range.

Quoting: “That’s an NBA frontcourt — you’re talking about a 7-1 guy (Williams) and a 6-10 guy (Banchero) who both are good at what they do,” Wolfpack coach Kevin Keatts told reporters on Saturday. “And they just completely dominated us at the 4 and the 5.”

Quick hitters: Duke is extremely athletic and passes well but typically relies on an eight-man rotation. … The Blue Devils have only played two true road games, losing at Ohio State and defeating Wake Forest. Coach Mike Krzyzewski missed the Wake game due to illness, saying he did not have COVID but that he felt fatigued for a number days … Miami had 15 steals and shot 45.8 percent from the floor in its 76-74 win at Durham on Jan. 8. If there’s one area where FSU could capitalize it is steals, especially with guards like Caleb Mills and Anthony Polite … In Duke’s last game, an 88-73 win over NC State, the Blue Devils shot 58.3 percent. Williams had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
