Puisis, Jones productive but FSU women fall short vs. BYU

No. 17 Florida State women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2021-22 season, falling to BYU 61-54 in the opening game of the St. Pete Showcase at Eckerd College.

The Seminoles (4-1) out-shot the Cougars (6-0) but were hurt by 25 turnovers. Junior guard Sammie Puisis led Florida State with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, accounting for all four of FSU’s 3-point field goals in her 28 minutes played.

Senior guard Morgan Jones added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt senior point guard Bianca Jackson missed her second straight game with an ankle injury.

BYU guard Shaylee Gonzales led all scorers with 24 points.

With 4:12 remaining in the game, Florida State fell behind 56-43 but made a strong comeback. Puisis recorded consecutive buckets to cut the deficit to 56-47 with 3:41 remaining. Despite a BYU made jumper by Maria Albiero, FSU forward Valencia Myers got a basket inside, and Kourtney Weber followed with a made jumper and the foul to cut it to 58-52 with 2:21 remaining.

After forcing another BYU turnover, FSU freshman Mariana Valenzuela hit a jumper to bring the deficit down to 58-54 with 1:45 remaining. FSU gave itself more opportunities, forcing another turnover and getting to the line on a shooting foul, but could not convert.

Florida State outrebounded BYU 40-36 and held the Cougars to 37 percent shooting.

FSU will face Purdue in the consolation game of the St. Pete Showcase on Saturday at 11 a.m. The game will be streamed on FloSports TV.
