Optimism over the prospects of Florida State football in 2020 and what coach Mike Norvell’s team can accomplish is evident as preseason magazines have arrived at stores around the country.
FSU comes in at No. 35 in the preseason rankings in Athlon and Lindy’s, projecting the Seminoles as the No. 6 team in the ACC. That’s not where FSU or the fans want to be perceived against the rest of the league but the editors of the magazines praised Norvell and the outlook for the program.
“All signs point to the former Memphis coach being a home-run hire,” Athlon editors wrote. “While Florida State probably isn’t going to compete with Clemson for ACC supremacy in the near future, Norvell should deliver some improvement in his Tallahassee debut.”
Lindy’s editors wrote: “At age 38, Norvell has the energy and experience to at least try to make the Clemson game competitive again. That’s really what this is about – baby steps in the ACC before trying to regain national traction.”
FSU is projected as the No. 3 team in the ACC’s Atlantic behind leader Clemson and No. 2 Louisville by both magazines. Lindy’s projects that FSU will go 7-5.
Defensive tackle Marvin Wilson is a first-team All-American in both publications. Wilson, cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. and safety Hamsah Nasirildeen are first-team All-ACC picks by Athlon, while Tamorrion Terry is a second-team selection and transfer running back Jashaun Corbin is a third-team pick. Wilson is a first-team All-ACC pick by Lindy’s, followed by Terry and Nasirildeen on the second team and Samuel on the third team.
Lindy’s also ranked the top 15 seniors in college football. Wilson is No. 2 and Nasirildeen at No. 7.
