FSU held its final athletics board meeting of the 2019-20 year last week. Below are some notes:
COVID-19 testing: FSU has tested 154 athletes and academic staff and there was one asymptomatic positive. FSU continues to work with Dr. Les Beitch, who is the school’s representative on the ACC coronavirus advisory committee and appointed by President Thrasher to work with the ACC to hear best practices for competition. The committee is expected to soon release its best practices for competition. That will help put finishing touches on a return plan and bring other athletes back to campus.
Basketball, fall sports: FSU administrators are working on a plan to allow student-athletes in basketball to return to the practice facility. The plan is to move from men’s and women’s basketball to cross country, soccer and volleyball. Dates are to be determined.
Football: FSU plans to accommodate students and the Marching Chiefs. Some ACC schools will not have bands or cheerleaders travel to away games. Decisions on many aspects of game day logistics and travel will come in July.
Fundraising: The Unconquered Campaign is at $93 million in pledges with $21 million in hand, while the Renaissance Campaign has $15 million in pledges with $4 million in hand.
New booster president: FSU continues the search for a new president and CEO as Andy Miller will move into a consulting role before retiring. A group of 100 candidates has been narrowed down to the final four, with more interviews in the coming weeks.
Academics: The switch to remote learning in March went well for academics, staff and students. The athletics department had a GPA of 3.22 GPA in 2019-20. The summer bridge program will begin in the coming week for new student athletes but will be done remotely.
