Florida State catcher Matheu Nelson has been named a first-team All-American by the national college baseball writers.
Nelson led FSU with a .330 batting average with 23 home runs and 66 RBI. The ACC player of the year also scored 50 runs and had a .436 on-base percentage. The redshirt sophomore will likely be a top draft pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, which begins on July 11.
Left-hander Parker Messick, the ACC pitcher of the year, was named to the third team.
Nelson and Miami reliever Carson Palmquist are the only two ACC players on the first team. The full NCBWA team can be viewed here.
Baseball America also announced its All-American teams on Thursday. Nelson made the first team as the designated hitter, giving the catching spot to Louisville’s Henry Davis. The full Baseball America team can be viewed here.
Summer Leagues begin
Eight FSU players will begin play in the Cape Cod League on Sunday or Monday. Left-hander Jonah Scolaro and infielder Ryan Romano will play at Hyannis. Brett Roberts, a Tennessee Tech transfer who has recently committed to FSU, will join the Cotuit roster. Right-hander Carson Montgomery will play at Falmouth. Another right-hander, Brandon Walker, will play at Harwich. Three Seminoles will suit up for Brewster: Messick, Bryce Hubbart and Dylan Simmons.
Daniel Andzel will play at Sanford in the Florida Collegiate Summer League.
