Myers leads FSU’s upset of No. 20 Notre Dame

The Florida State women’s basketball team had been sputtering through the 2021-22 season but picked up a much-needed upset of a top-25 team.

Valencia Myers scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds while O’Mariah Gordon sank two free-throw attempts with 12.5 seconds left to hold off Notre Dame’s fourth-quarter charge and secure Florida State’s 70-65 win over the No. 20 Fighting Irish on Sunday afternoon.

It was the Seminoles’ first win in 12 games all-time vs. Notre Dame.

Myers shot 7 of 9 from the floor for FSU. Sara Bejedi scored an FSU-high 12 points for the Seminoles’ first win over a top-25 team this season. Erin Howard added seven points, five rebounds and two steals.

Gordon scored 11 points for FSU (11-10, 5-6 ACC), which shot (26 of 51) 51 percent from the floor and (6 of 13) 46.2 percent from 3-point range.

“So proud of this team that has continued to trust the process,” FSU coach Sue Semrau said. “We talked a lot about needing to really understand each other, the point guard putting us in position to score. It’s getting easier for everyone around them now and I think you could see that here this afternoon just the fact that we shot the ball so well.”

FSU broke the game open by outscoring Notre Dame 22-9 in the third period. The Seminoles shot 9 of 13 from the floor, with Gordon leading the way with five points.

But Notre Dame climbed all the way back, erasing FSU’s 18-point lead in the fourth quarter and cutting it to two points with under a minute to go. Gordon made her free-throw attempts, while Jones and Bianca Jackson each made one of two shots from the line in the final seconds.

Olivia Miles scored 17 points and Maya Dodson had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Notre Dame, which fell to 18-5, 9-3.
