Florida State put aside a long break and began 2022 with an emphatic 41-point victory.
Valencia Myers had 12 points , while Morgan Jones and Makayla Timpson added 11 points apiece as FSU routed Wake Forest 87-46 on Sunday afternoon. It was the first game back for the Seminoles since they let a late lead slip away and lost in overtime at Wake Forest on Dec. 30.
But on Sunday it was all FSU from the start, jumping out to a 44-28 lead at the break. The Seminoles held Wake Forest to just 35.6 percent shooting from the floor and 22.2 percent from 3-point range.
FSU also forced 17 free-throw attempts.
“I’m so proud of the way they defended,” FSU coach Sue Semrau said. “It started with our post players and not letting their post players get easy touches. I thought our guards did a great job on Jewel Spear. They wore her down and that defense really led to a nice offensive performance.”
Erin Howard and O’Mariah Gordon had eight points and six rebounds apiece as 11 players scored for FSU, which improved to 7-6 and 1-2 in the ACC.
Sammie Puisis etched her name in history, converting on her 100th career 3-point field goal, making her only the 16th Seminole to achieve this feat. Puisis had nine points on Sunday, all of which were from behind the three-point line.
It’s the 11th straight time Jones has scored in double figures. The Seminoles shot 33 of 60 (55 percent) from the floor, 8 of 16 (50 percent) from 3-point range and 13 of 15 (86.7 percent) from the free-throw line.
Wake Forest fell to 12-4, 2-3 ACC.
