Parker Messick pitched 6.2 shutout innings, matching a career-best 14 strikeouts and not allowing a walk, as Florida State defeated Louisville 8-1 on Thursday night.
Messick is the nation’s leader in strikeouts with 94. It was the sixth time this season Messick has thrown 10 or more strikeouts in a game in 2022. And Messick did it against a Cardinals lineup that featured six batters with a .326 average or higher.
“That is a really, really good team,” FSU coach Mike Martin Jr. said. “And Parker was fantastic. Set the tone. … He’s pitching the new-age way, throwing off-speed pitches in fastball counts and really playing with hitters’ minds. to be able to land those consistently for strikes is not easy to do.”
Jaime Ferrer had a two-run double and Alex Toral later followed with a two-run home run as FSU (20-13, 8-8 ACC) had a five-run second inning. Toral hit his 10th home run of the year and third in the past four games. (He leads FSU in home runs and RBI with 33.)
Ferrer added a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Logan Lacey added a sac fly in the eighth.
Wyatt Crowell had two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Dylan Simmons had a strikeout in the ninth to wrap up the win.
Ben Bianco scored on a passed ball for Louisville (24-9, 9-4 ACC) in the eighth inning. The Cardinals are the leaders in the Atlantic and were averaging 10 runs per game, leading the nation.
