Mathis, Toral lead FSU’s power display in rout of Bethune

Brock Mathis and Alex Toral hit three-run home runs, two of Florida State’s five extra-base hits, as the Seminoles routed Bethune-Cookman 17-9 on Wednesday night.

Toral added a two-run double and Jackson Greene had a two-run single as FSU scored a season high in runs and cranked out 16 hits. James Tibbs added a solo home run as 10 Seminoles scored runs.

Toral and Tibbs now have four home runs apiece to lead FSU (11-5).

Carson Montgomery (2-0) went five innings, working his way out of trouble on a few occasions as he allowed five runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks. He had three strikeouts.

The Seminoles’ bullpen cruised in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings as Wyatt Crowell, Jackson Baumeister and Conner Whittaker each tossed a shutout inning. Andrew Armstrong allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in the ninth.

Bethune pitchers had 11 strikeouts but also walked 12 and hit five batters. Lake Fisher had a three-run home run for the Wildcats (5-11).
