Coach Mike Martin Jr. has settled on the majority of the positions around the infield as Florida State prepares to open the 2021 season.
Martin Jr. said he would start Nander de Sedas at shortstop, freshman Vince Smith at third and Jackson Greene at second base. While he has not settled on a starter at first base, Martin Jr. will go with Dylan Simmons or Tyler Martin. Whoever is not at first will be the designated hitter.
FSU will start Logan Lacey in left field as Elijah Cabell conintues to recover from a lingering hamstring injury. While Cabell had seven home runs last season, Lacey led the team by hitting .379 with four doubles and a home run in 2020.
“We’re going to sit him this weekend,” Martin Jr. said of Cabell. “We don’t have any midweek games next week. It will give him another legitimate six days of rehab.”
Martin Jr. said he has not seen enough separation among the candidates at closer. “It will work itself out,” Martin Jr. said.
FSU opens up against North Florida on Saturday at 2 p.m. and then plays a doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m. (all games will stream live on ACC Network Extra).
